He is the first <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"African American\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_American\">African American<\/a> to be elected to the U.S. presidency and the first one born outside the <a title=\"Contiguous United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Contiguous_United_States\">contiguous United States<\/a>. Born in <a title=\"Honolulu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Honolulu\">Honolulu, Hawaii<\/a>, Obama is a graduate of <a title=\"Columbia University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbia_University\">Columbia University<\/a> and <a title=\"Harvard Law School\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harvard_Law_School\">Harvard Law School<\/a>, where he was president of the <i><a title=\"Harvard Law Review\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harvard_Law_Review\">Harvard Law Review<\/a><\/i>. He was a <a title=\"Community organizing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Community_organizing\">community organizer<\/a> in <a title=\"Chicago\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago\">Chicago<\/a> before earning his <a title=\"Juris Doctor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juris_Doctor\">law degree<\/a>. He worked as a <a title=\"Civil and political rights\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civil_and_political_rights\">civil rights<\/a> attorney and taught <a title=\"Constitutional law\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constitutional_law\">constitutional law<\/a> at the <a title=\"University of Chicago Law School\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Chicago_Law_School\">University of Chicago Law School<\/a> from 1992 to 2004. While <a title=\"Illinois Senate career of Barack Obama\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illinois_Senate_career_of_Barack_Obama\">serving three terms<\/a> representing the 13th District in the <a title=\"Illinois Senate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illinois_Senate\">Illinois Senate<\/a> from 1997 to 2004, he <a title=\"Illinois's 1st congressional district election, 2000\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illinois%27s_1st_congressional_district_election,_2000\">ran unsuccessfully<\/a> in the Democratic primary for the <a title=\"United States House of Representatives\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_House_of_Representatives\">United States House of Representatives<\/a> in 2000 against incumbent <a title=\"Bobby Rush\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bobby_Rush\">Bobby Rush<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, Obama received national attention during his <a title=\"United States Senate election in Illinois, 2004\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Senate_election_in_Illinois,_2004\">campaign to represent Illinois<\/a> in the <a title=\"United States Senate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Senate\">United States Senate<\/a> with his victory in the March <a title=\"Democratic Party (United States)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democratic_Party_(United_States)\">Democratic Party<\/a> <a title=\"Primary election\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Primary_election\">primary<\/a>, his <a title=\"2004 Democratic National Convention keynote address\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2004_Democratic_National_Convention_keynote_address\">keynote address<\/a> at the <a title=\"2004 Democratic National Convention\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2004_Democratic_National_Convention\">Democratic National Convention<\/a> in July, and his election to the Senate in November. He began his presidential campaign in 2007 and, after <a title=\"Barack Obama presidential primary campaign, 2008\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama_presidential_primary_campaign,_2008\">a close primary campaign<\/a> against <a title=\"Hillary Clinton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hillary_Clinton\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> in 2008, he won sufficient delegates in the <a title=\"Democratic Party presidential primaries, 2008\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries,_2008\">Democratic Party primaries<\/a> to receive the presidential nomination. He then defeated <a title=\"Republican Party (United States)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republican_Party_(United_States)\">Republican<\/a> nominee <a title=\"John McCain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_McCain\">John McCain<\/a> in the <a title=\"United States presidential election, 2008\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_presidential_election,_2008\">general election<\/a>, and was <a title=\"First inauguration of Barack Obama\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_inauguration_of_Barack_Obama\">inaugurated as president<\/a> on January 20, 2009. Nine months after his inauguration, Obama was named the <a title=\"2009 Nobel Peace Prize\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2009_Nobel_Peace_Prize\">2009 Nobel Peace Prize<\/a> laureate.<\/p>\n<p>During his first two years in office, Obama signed into law <a title=\"Stimulus (economics)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stimulus_(economics)\">economic stimulus<\/a> legislation in response to the <a title=\"Great Recession\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Recession\">Great Recession<\/a> in the form of the <a title=\"American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Recovery_and_Reinvestment_Act_of_2009\">American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009<\/a> and the <a title=\"Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tax_Relief,_Unemployment_Insurance_Reauthorization,_and_Job_Creation_Act_of_2010\">Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010<\/a>. Other major domestic initiatives in his first term included the <a title=\"Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patient_Protection_and_Affordable_Care_Act\">Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act<\/a>, often referred to as &#8220;Obamacare&#8221;; the <a title=\"Dodd\u2013Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dodd%E2%80%93Frank_Wall_Street_Reform_and_Consumer_Protection_Act\">Dodd\u2013Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act<\/a>; and the <a title=\"Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Don%27t_Ask,_Don%27t_Tell_Repeal_Act_of_2010\">Don&#8217;t Ask, Don&#8217;t Tell Repeal Act of 2010<\/a>. In foreign policy, Obama <a title=\"Withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Withdrawal_of_U.S._troops_from_Iraq\">ended U.S. military involvement<\/a> in the <a title=\"Iraq War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iraq_War\">Iraq War<\/a>, increased U.S. troop levels in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"War in Afghanistan (2001\u201314)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_in_Afghanistan_(2001%E2%80%9314)\">Afghanistan<\/a>, signed the <a title=\"New START\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_START\">New START<\/a> arms control treaty with <a title=\"Russia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russia\">Russia<\/a>, ordered <a title=\"2011 military intervention in Libya\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2011_military_intervention_in_Libya\">U.S. military involvement in Libya<\/a> in opposition to <a title=\"Muammar Gaddafi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muammar_Gaddafi\">Muammar Gaddafi<\/a>, and ordered the military operation that resulted in the <a title=\"Death of Osama bin Laden\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Death_of_Osama_bin_Laden\">death of Osama bin Laden<\/a>. In January 2011, <a title=\"United States House of Representatives elections, 2010\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_House_of_Representatives_elections,_2010\">the Republicans regained control of the House of Representatives<\/a> as the Democratic Party lost a total of 63 seats; and, after a lengthy debate over federal spending and whether or not to raise the nation&#8217;s <a title=\"United States debt ceiling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_debt_ceiling\">debt limit<\/a>, Obama signed the <a title=\"Budget Control Act of 2011\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Budget_Control_Act_of_2011\">Budget Control Act of 2011<\/a> and the <a title=\"American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Taxpayer_Relief_Act_of_2012\">American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Obama was <a title=\"United States presidential election, 2012\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_presidential_election,_2012\">re-elected president<\/a> in November 2012, defeating Republican nominee <a title=\"Mitt Romney\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mitt_Romney\">Mitt Romney<\/a>, and was <a title=\"Second inauguration of Barack Obama\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_inauguration_of_Barack_Obama\">sworn in for a second term<\/a> on January 20, 2013. During his second term, Obama has promoted domestic policies related to <a title=\"Gun politics in the United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gun_politics_in_the_United_States\">gun control<\/a> in response to the <a title=\"Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sandy_Hook_Elementary_School_shooting\">Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting<\/a>, and has called for greater inclusiveness for <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"LGBT American\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LGBT_American\">LGBT Americans<\/a>, while his administration has filed briefs that urged the <a title=\"Supreme Court of the United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supreme_Court_of_the_United_States\">Supreme Court<\/a> to strike down part of the federal <a title=\"Defense of Marriage Act\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Defense_of_Marriage_Act\">Defense of Marriage Act<\/a> (<i><a title=\"United States v.
